Charms for awesome people by rontufox Charms for awesome people by rontufox
I've always enjoyed making keychains/bookmarks/etc for people, so when I found this tutorial [link] for charms, I just had to try it out.
Just drew em up on the computer and used injet shrink film to print them out and shrink them.
(Guess I shoulda put a quarter in there for size, oops)

Made two each for my sister, ~Spatty, and *sapphii
It was really fun! And not bad for my first try I think :XD:

Yeah, pretty nifty how they turn out!  I'm not very crafty though, I felt kinda paranoid the entire time haha.  What charms did you make?

I'm not so crafty either, so I've made a couple experiment batches and some turned out better than others, haha! I just made charms of some of my own drawings, like these ones: nelmathyria.deviantart.com/art... nelmathyria.deviantart.com/art... nelmathyria.deviantart.com/art...

Ah, very cool! (the new way deviantart shows links really confused me at first, I didn't realize you'd linked three!)  I'd love to see how the ones in the first link turned out! (I feel really bad for not remembering the names of either character there)

Hmm yeah, the new links are kinda weird, sorry I didn't make it more clear! I don't have any pictures of them anywhere at the moment, but I am thinking of trying to sell them on etsy soon. Dunno if anyone will want to buy them, but I figure it's worth a shot!

Hi! I really like how the keychains you made for my sis *sapphii's keychains, and I read the tutorial comment below, but I have a few more question if you don't mind! (Okay this is kind of a dumb question but I want to make sure) Did you use an inkjet printer to print these or is it possible to use a different printer? And also, could you link me to a picture/listing for that matte spray you used? (Or if you bought it from the store which store) I've looked around here and there and a few products seem to use the name matte, but I want to make sure I get the right kind!

Hm, I'm not sure if it's possible to print on the paper with anything other than inkjet. For the matte spray, I just dug through my super old art supplies lol, so I didn't use anything specially for these keychains. What I used is called Krylon matte finish, and I think it can be found at Michael's? Sorry, I haven't shopped for art supplies like that in years, I just had it sitting around :XD: Hopefully that helps!

Very cute charms...and pretty good for a first try. I recognize Link, Gohan, Bulbasaur, Lion-O, and Koopa...but who's the guy with pipe?

Thanks! I wish I'd cut closer to the characters so there'd be less white space. I cut too close for my test ones, so then I overcompensated a bit :XD: The one with the pipe is Bilbo.

Thanks! I'm not sure how much luck you'll have with coming across it, I had to order that paper from Amazon cuz my local art/craft stores either didn't carry it or were out. Shrink paper is easy to find but I guess injet shrink paper is a little more specialty. Anyway, I'd love to see you do something like this if you ever get the chance!

It's pretty easy! The hardest part is finding the paper, I had to order it from Amazon cuz my local art/craft stores didn't supply it or were out. If you ever get to trying it, I'd like to give a few pointers on the process since a few parts of that tutorial are confusing or too vague for for my tastes...

Use Grafix white injet shrink film!!

File and printing:
-make the characters HUUUUGE, mine were 3 inches tall at 300 dpi and after shrinking they were much smaller than I expected—better to make them too big and resize smaller than be stuck with too small
-arrange the characters on the page for each to have enough white space when you cut them (sounds duh, but it requires more space than you’d think haha)
-lighten the opacity between 50-60% before you print—shrinking makes the colors more saturated

Cutting and baking:
-cut them out roughly first, hole punch them, THEN make the final cutting out with the amount of white border you want
-cut enough space around the hole punch
-keep a large book handy to place on the charms after taking them out of the oven in case they curl (mine never did but I used the book anyway just in case)

Sealing:
-you don’t have to seal, but if you don’t, water or moisture will make them bleed
-do NOT use modpodge like in the tutorial, it totally makes the colors bleed
-I used 3 layers of matt spray, it’s really easy and works well (no brush strokes). You could prolly try gloss spray, it might look better

Keychain part thing:
-you can only get cell phone lariats by ordering online—I didn’t know that so I had to make my own lame ones lol—I’d recommend ordering lariats at the same time you order the shrink paper

That’s it I think…

Oh awesome! The one downside to the inkjet shrink film is I'm not sure how sturdy they are, and they also have a strange texture. If I knew other methods I'd try to help you out, but I'm ignorant about crafts lol...
